Understanding Bedwetting (Nocturnal Enuresis) in Children
In my clinic in Adana, nocturnal enuresis is a common concern among parents. It is defined as involuntary urination during sleep in children over the age of five. With my years of clinical experience, I emphasize that this is a manageable condition that requires patience and a systematic approach.
My Clinical Approach to Treatment
Before suggesting any intervention, I conduct a thorough physical examination to rule out underlying medical issues. For my patients in the Çukurova region, I focus on two core methodologies:
- Bedwetting Alarms: These devices detect moisture and sound an alarm, helping the child associate the sensation of a full bladder with waking up, thereby training the brain-bladder connection.
- Pharmacological Therapy: In specific cases, such as hormonal imbalances where the body produces too much urine at night, I prescribe medication as a safe and effective secondary option.
Choosing the Right Path
Every child responds differently. While alarm devices offer a permanent learning mechanism, medication is often preferred for immediate results during social events or specific needs. As a urologist, my priority is ensuring the psychological well-being of the child throughout this journey in the Mediterranean region.
