The key to diagnosing dyspareunia is determining the precise location of the pain. We categorize it into Superficial and Deep Dyspareunia. In this article, I discuss their clinical differences.
1. Superficial Dyspareunia
Pain felt at the vaginal opening during initial entry or touch. Common causes are vaginal dryness, rigid hymen, vestibulitis, or localized infections.
2. Deep Dyspareunia
Pain felt deep in the pelvis during deep thrusting or cervical contact. Common causes are endometriosis, pelvic adhesions, fibroids, or ovarian cysts.
