Anismus is not a muscle weakness issue but a coordination dysfunction. Therefore, Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy and Biofeedback are central to successful recovery. In this article, I discuss how biofeedback trains anal muscles.
Understanding Biofeedback Therapy
Many anismus patients are unaware they contract their muscles during defecation. Biofeedback uses visual or auditory feedback of anal pressures (using non-painful sensors) to show patients their muscle activity in real-time, teaching them how to lower sphincter tone voluntarily.
Physical Therapy Integration
Therapy includes manual trigger point release, stretching exercises, and coordinating diaphragmatic breathing with pelvic floor relaxation to restore natural bowel patterns.
